Chronic Pain is Complex & Can Be Directly Related to Stress

“Research over the past 25 years has shown that pain is influenced by emotional and social factors. These need to be addressed along with the physical causes of pain. Chronic stress is one factor that contributes to chronic pain. The good news is that you can get natural pain relief by making relaxation exercises a part of your pain-management plan.”

What the NASA RESEARCH says about the Best Type of Healing Art:

Dr. Yvonne Clearwater, senior research psychologist at NASA Ames Research Center has conducted several studies on the healing effects of original artwork.

Dr. Clearwater offers these guidelines:

  • Images evoking thoughts of LANDSCAPES or WATER are very healing (colors also have individual healing properties );
  • Views with greater visual depth that draw you into the painting are preferred;
  • Less suited for healing purposes: scenes with animals, buildings or people.

Viewing Certain Types of Art Reduces Stress Levels According to Research & Medical Doctors

The Effects of Viewing Art on Sress Reduction and Cortisol Levels – University of Westminster, UK

“Research Summary

We studied the impact of a brief lunchtime visit to an art gallery on London City workers’ levels of the stress hormone cortisol as well as self-report levels of stress and arousal.

Average levels of cortisol and self-report stress were significantly reduced by the visit, levels of arousal were unchanged.

The observed drop in cortisol was rapid and substantial

We conclude that viewing art during the gallery visit caused rapid normalisation (recovery) from the consequences of high stress.”

Color can also have stimulating effects on Memory, Alertness and Cognitive Patterns which all decline with age.

When I need to feel energized, I stare at a Leanne Venier painting titled ‘Pulsating Luminosity‘. The bright reds and yellows increase my alertness and ability to concentrate…”

“I’ve never been fond of abstract art until I saw Leanne Venier’s work.

Her abstracts often feel like calming landscape images suggesting views of land and water. The numerous layers in her paintings give a great sense of depth, expansiveness and openness, creating an effect that draws viewers into the painting. I’ve now proudly added yet another painting by her to my art collection.”

MEDICAL RESEARCH & The Positive Effects of Healing Artwork in Hospitals

Numerous research studies have shown that the Right Type of Artwork in Hospitals has measurable healing & stress-reducing effects:

  • Artwork reduces patient & employee anxiety and stress;
  • Heart-rate recordings and questionnaires showed that stress in a dental clinic was appreciably lower on days when a large mural was hung at the back of a waiting room.
  • In another study, ceiling mounted pictures shown to highly-stressed pre-surgical patients on gurneys, resulted in lower blood pressure (Ross, 1990).
  • It has become increasingly common to use artwork to distract patients from their pain or stress.
  • Pre-surgical patients on gurneys looking at ceiling-mounted paintings had lower blood pressure & stress;
  • Less stress = faster recovery times & reduced hospital stays;
  • Less stress = reduced pain perception & less need for medication;
  • Artwork reduces depression associated with chemotherapy, dialysis & other invasive treatments;
  • Artwork reduces mental healthcare treatment times;
  • Artwork reduces overall cost of patient care & reduces employee turnover.

How Art Changes Your Brain: Differential Effects of Visual Art Production and Cognitive Art Evaluation on Functional Brain Connectivity” – Department of Neurology, Germany – July, 2014

Visual art represents a powerful resource for mental and physical well-being.

Recent research on visual art has focused on its psychological and physiological effects. It has shown that visual art interventions have stabilizing effects on the individual by:

  • reducing distress,
  • increasing self-reflection and self-awareness,
  • altering behaviour and thinking patterns, and also by
  • normalizing heart rate, blood pressure, or even cortisol levels.”

Neural correlates of viewing paintings: evidence from a quantitative meta-analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging data” – University of Toronto, June 2014

Using fMRI readings “As predicted, viewing paintings was correlated with activation in a distributed system including the occipital lobes, temporal lobe structures in the ventral stream involved in object (fusiform gyrus) and scene (parahippocampal gyrus) perception, and the anterior insula-a key structure in experience of emotion. In addition, we also observed activation in the posterior cingulate cortex bilaterally-part of the brain’s default network. These results suggest that viewing paintings engages not only systems involved in visual representation and object recognition, but also structures underlying emotions and internalized cognitions.”

Leanne, I went to the Louvre in Paris a few years back; I love the masters, renaissance art, I love the way it moves my soul, but good grief, your ability to invoke soul responses with your colors is uncanny. This one really stirred something in me – gorgeous. The energies in this one are more than healing they are uplifting, inspirational and something else I can’t put my finger on. Can’t quit staring. Hope I get to see it in person. (Referring to Journey to the Light, 48×72”)
